At first, in the 17th and 18th centuries, “libertines” were people who questioned the rules of religion and society. They wanted more freedom of thought.
Later, in the 19th and 20th centuries, libertarianism began to be associated with sexual freedom. Today, modern libertarianism speaks of free, consensual sexual practices, where everyone agrees and is respected.
Feminist movements and the fight for LGBTQ+ rights are also helping to redefine libertarianism, emphasizing equality and respect. Basically, libertarianism is a search for freedom and pleasure, but always with the consent and respect of the other.
